Campbell Smith & Co Ltd have been commissioned to undertake the re-gilding of the organ pipes as part of a major refurbishment of the organ casing at Kings College Chapel, Cambridge.
The pipes are being removed for repair by Harrison & Harrison, the original organ builder, following which the gilding will be renewed and protected while the pipes are re-installed. Some of the smallest pipe diameters can be measured in millimetres, while the largest 32’ bass pipes which run horizontally inside the screen are big enough for a fully-grown person to climb inside.
The overall restoration programme is expected to take nine months.
